It was a Ritsu-centric episode after all, with a side of Sawa-chan misfortune. So firstly, the whole notion of Ritsu wanting to quit drums was a bit too random; she’s been playing drums from the very start and she just spontaneously comes to the conclusion that she doesn’t want to do drums. Well, that doesn’t really matter; the episode was just to reiterate Ritsu’s stance in the band, but it also gives us a little bit more insight (which still wasn’t very much, but eghh).
Personally, I thought Yui stole this episode just by being a little more quirky than usual. Not entirely a bad thing because I laughed at just about everything she was doing to cheer up Ritsu. Yui felt so proud when she was lecturing Ritsu on the guitar but quickly got disappointed knowing that Ritsu already knows about the guitar. The most defining moment goes to her effort to give Ritsu the spotlight as much as possible, save for the actual lighting on Ritsu. I can relate to Ritsu in that situation; if I had a crazed girl like Yui suddenly turn herself around to stare at me (along with three other girls for that matter), I’d be scared shitless and feel awkward. If you take a look at one of the images above, even the girls don’t really know what the hell is going on and are just following along with Yui’s ideal. I do commend Yui for looking after her fellow bandmate, but maybe she tries a bit too much out of the norm. IIRC, I also would like to point out that this is the first time this season we see Yui wearing her line of one-line song shirts. This episode, she’s wearing “Nylon,” which can refer to the type of pantyhose she always wears, but in this case, I assume it’s a reference to a band or song . I also liked that Ritsu reminds herself of why she took drums in the first place and she starts falling in love with it once again, immediately picking up her sticks and drumming. Good key scene and animation there, KyoAni. BTW, why is it that you always animate the in-episode drumming better when it’s not actually on the drums? Just saying.
Other things to take notice of is the substantial quality rise in the girls’ classroom. I guess they got a lot more budget this season so now they’re taking the time to design and color in the rest of the class. It also pretty much confirms they are in an all-girls school, as if that wasn’t obvious enough. This is probably just me thinking it, but didn’t Sawa-chan look like Konata’s dad Soujirou (Lucky Star) that time he wore those shades and mouth mask? I guess she’s a fan of Kamen Rider too! Finally, I’m curious about Mugi’s new song she made up from Ritsu’s making the keyboard “talk.” Hopefully we get to hear this song soon. Next episode is the Kyoto trip episode. Oh, KyoAni, you sly you…
