K-ON!eps 5

Needless to say, quite the awesome episode. It gets better and better each time, a phase I’m all too familiar with when it comes to KyoAnime. Did I see male teachers at this school… WAAT? After showcasing, to some extent, quirks from the core four, we get to see another side of Sawako-sensei like we’ve never seen since… well, her first appearance as a beautiful music teacher. I love the scenes where she’s running madly through the hallway, performing mad circus tricks like a dog, and her backstory of wanting to impress a boy who liked wild girls. She should’ve stayed at “Love and Peace” because the third time definitely lost its charm. Still, I commend this shift, which means we’ll be seeing a lot more Sawa-chan now (lol, Sawa-chan). She’s hardcore on the guitar (tooth-picking?! “My guitar….”). On the other front, Mugi won a lot of points for showing off the yuri goggles. Her fixated bystander practice fairs hilarity. Hey, Mugi, why not be part of it next time? I love the misguided conversation she had with Mio and Ritsu. Mio thought Mugi liked Sawako, Ritsu thought Mio thought “girls bonding” was okay, but after Mugi explains girls expressing interest for each other, Mio and Ritsu are left confused.
One of my favorite quirks the girls have is how slow and dramatic their reactions are after getting winded of bad news. [Students who have to take the make-up exam can't participate in club activities... EHH?! The light music club isn't recognized as an official club.... I see... WUT?] So with all that said and done, we do get to see the girls practice a bit. It sounded good for those few seconds so I hope it’ll sound great next episode at the school festival. I felt very bad for Yui yet at the same time couldn’t help laughing at her. If she’s singing, she’s not playing, and if she’s playing, she’s not singing! Eventually Sawako taught her to do both, but no preview was available due to her voice being too exhausted. And then Yui and Sawa-chan make that innocent face. I think my heart’s pounding quite a bit for the next episode. Will it topple Live Alive? Or will it get dugg down cuz it sucks?
I don’t know if it’s me, but some of the humor in this episode seemed forced for this show. Like Sawako’s sudden track run felt a bit extreme and out of place for me. The same with her past on how she got her wild side. I’ll think of that extremity as part of her charm because I did like seeing her reactions in this episode. The switch in personality took a bit of time to get used to, but I’m glad she’s not ending up as some generic nice and beautiful school teacher. Sawako’s persona is doing well so far to mix in with the group of those four eccentric girls so the change is a positive for me overall. Speaking of changes, Mugi’s pervy lesbian side was a bit of shock. She even has yuri goggles ready for any female on female interaction moment to come. This welcomed quirk came out of nowhere really, but I guess she has to provide some sort of fanservice besides providing the tea and cake. I’m expecting all sorts of erotic fantasies from Mugi with this new development.
Another thing I was glad to see was some concentration on the K-ON Bu’s music. And unlike previous episodes I actually get to hear a bit of their music played! That sure was exciting. I liked how Mio used some real life experience for writing the lyrics; and though the lyrics are on the girly side, nonetheless I’m interested in how they’ll be put to use when the time comes next episode. It was expected that Mio would be the one to sing since she’s a pretty damn good singer which is evident by the ED sequence though I wouldn’t have minded hearing Yui since she has a pretty cute voice. And I liked how she put effort in wanting to sing but it’s a shame she couldn’t deliver in the end.
The school festival is already up next episode and I’m wondering if they’ll be able to perform at their best with Mio’s worrying about not having enough practice. I don’t think their performance will be a flop regardless of practice or not. Even if it does suck, Mugi and her nurse outfit will be there to save the day.
