[ Episode 2: Instrument! ]

I enjoyed the parts where the girls are at the store checking out the guitars. It reminds me vastly of the times I spent with my friend at the Guitar Center, playing around with the guitars, drums, or keyboard/pianos. KyoAni really captures that feeling of going inside an instrument store, filled with instruments everywhere you looked from bottom to top. I love Yui’s creative mind when she sees the double-necked guitar and thinks a person needs to have four arms to play it. Finally, after working two days counting cars and people passing by, turns out it was pointless in the end, and Yui got her Les Paul with just the money her mother gave her. Oh, but the girls’ efforts weren’t for nothing. It was amusing to see Ritsu playing with the counter like drums. Occupational disease is kinda scary though. What really got me laughing was the fact that, with a bit of inspiration from Ritsu, Tsumugi’s status (and eyebrows) helped Yui snatch the guitar for cheap.
Yui’s such an adorable girl. Her promise to practice once she gets her guitar was really cute, you just can’t resist. Once she got her guitar she was pretty much giddy, even going so far as to sleeping with her guitar. Guess she forgot about practice again. Now that I think about it, she’s about as silly as Nodame. Yeah, if Tsumugi ever lets Yui play her keyboard, I can just imagine Yui making that weird face Nodame does all the time. You know, I really hope they do get to Budoukan, even though that’s a near-impossible feat, and even more impossible if they want to do that before graduating. Ah, but maybe there will be a real life event just like how they had Suzumiya Haruhi no Gekisou and that Lucky Star event. I’ve got my fingers crossed.

I think the job part of this episode may have seemed pointless plot-wise since Yui bought the guitar within her original budget. The whole thing reminded me of Lucky Star with all its slice of life moments such as the occupation disease and the four girls struggling to get through the job. Everything they did might have seemed like all for nothing, but looking at it from another perspective the scene portrayed the friendship between the members slowly bonding and how important the light music club is to the first three as their willing to get jobs to make it succeed. And maybe to show off a little Mio love with that adorable personality of hers. The scene where she’s imagining working all those part time jobs was so cute that I’m sure it spazed up all you Mio fags.
One thing I found a bit off in the episode were the chibi sequences. The sudden transition in art style had me surprised. I didn’t really like them to be honest because it didn’t really add to the humor for me. Actually, I might have been irked to the point where it took some away. Maybe I’ll get used to them later if KyoAni keeps using them, but at this point it just feels a bit too random like I was watching something out of Suzumiya-chan.
