I’m a big fan of school festival episodes because they tend to stand out far beyond the regular episodes. With K-ON!, it was indeed enjoyable, but I actually felt there was something lacking. Most likely I got that feeling during the “main event” when it was Fuwafuwa Time. I suppose I expected this to be on Live Alive standards, but in retrospect, I should’ve guessed not. Although I have to say, despite not even showing animations of the girls playing their instruments (granted, they do show a good chunk of that within the intro), I did like the PV insert. It appears that fancy attires are more desirable than actual playing. KyoAni’s known to have some level of fanservice in its shows, so it’s no surprise they took out the direct shot of Mio’s pantsu, or perhaps that was because of the fullscreen dimensions. Instead, we get a taste of shima bowls. What the crap.
Anyhow, I enjoyed it nonetheless. Actually, my favorite parts were at the beginning with Yui talking like an old hag and then conversing in sumo talk with Ritsu. +1 for Toyosaki Aki on that. Moreover, I chuckled during the song because she just HAD to sing backup vocals in her cracked voice. Before the concert, I felt Mio was quite anxious and the tone in her voice made her sound really adorable to me. Later on when she seemed “calm,” I started laughing when she trembling while holding her teacup and plate. After six episodes now, I see they really like to decorate that school statue. Inside joke? And finally, I haven’t seen a ton of guys in one episode until now. Now, the song itself wasn’t so bad. Typical even, but I have to remember that behind the nice tune, the lyrics are just really cheesy, and Mio wrote this herself. Expect a review of the single from me soon!

The girls’ first concert! And it was one to remember thanks to a weird yet cute insert music video and pantsu~ To be honest, I would have preferred seeing all four actually playing the instruments throughout the song, but I didn’t mind the music video approach. Either KyoAni was too lazy to draw all the playing animations or they were trying to be creative. Hopefully the latter. Speaking of which, did anybody else get “Driver’s High” vibes in the music video with the cops chasing after them in the car? All it needed were two of the girls sharing a lolipop and it would’ve been perfect. The song itself wan’t actually good in my opinion. I don’t know, it felt so lackluster. I guess my expectations were too high since I had Haruhi’s Live Aive in my mind during the anticipation. But hey this is their debut so I’ll cut them some slack.
I loved the scene where Yui and Ritsu imitated the way sumo wrestlers talk. Yui did a surprisingly well done imitation. I was surprised her seiyuu could do such a masculine, raspy voice. Though the crowd behind them wasn’t impressed (more like mortified), I would have clapped for their little performance.
Next episode seems to have a whole lot of nothing so I won’t be expecting much. A couple of HHNNNGGGG moments at the most and maybe the set up for their next concert.
