Nearly the first half of the episode was pretty uneventful. Normally, the show isn’t that eventful to begin with, but they were at least doing something. Here, they were just loafing around and killing time. Oddly enough, I didn’t find it to be that boring. Considering how these girls are always focusing on other things, it was a nice sight to see them actually have too much free time on their hands (free time to not do anything, that is). In all that time, Yui was being incredibly cute and bubbly without even trying.
I was ecstatic when I suddenly saw that the girls were tuning up and prepping their instruments for some reason. Actually doing a performance when Azusa’s not around? That almost seems a little unfair, but these girls are graduating so go easy. Recording their entire songs on a cassette was quite possibly the greatest idea they ever had. Recording on a CD would probably save the time of swapping side, but I think the cassette tape works a lot more here since it is easier to record live using tapes, but also because the cassette is vintage so it would be kinda cool for the next generation to discover HTT on tape. Also, big points to KyoAni for implementing the cassette tape seen in the eyecatches as the one and only cassette tape here. It kinda feels like all those eyecatches were recordings the girls made, which is neat when you think about it.
Starting off with an instrumental Fuwafuwa was a nice suggestion from Azusa, though I’m not exactly sure of the difference between “instrumental” and “karaoke” to this day because the Japanese CDs interchange these terms constantly when referring to the ‘empty tracks.’ Curry Nochi Rice never gets to be completely heard in this anime, which is a little disappointing, but luckily they never forgot about that, unlike Mugi’s song, which seems to have been completely forgotten. Unless, of course, that song is this “Ichigo Parfait ga Tomaranai” (The Strawberry Parfait Won’t Stop”?) that was on their list (and on a list in a previous episode) though that sounds more like a Yui song to me. Nonetheless, it’s strange that we haven’t heard even the tiniest bit of this song in the show yet. Feel free to correct me on that one. There’s also one on the list called “Honey Sweet Tea Time” that hasn’t been heard yet either. Odd that the new songs “Gohan wa Okazu” and “U&I” aren’t part of this list, making it out to seven songs instead of nine. They mention a “Vol. 2″ so we’ll see how it goes from there.
Next week, get ready for the waterworks.
